Tyra Beauty Beyond Skin Deep

Tyra Beauty Beyond Skin Deep

What was meant to be 3 days of exploration within the adverting industry became personally transformational.  It was an experience both the participants and professional mentors will not soon forget.  Who would have thought that a challenge for teenage girls to create a campaign for Tyra Banks’ makeup and skincare line Tyra Beauty, would lead to conversations about self-esteem and self-love. Particularly, when it comes to embracing and celebrating the color of one’s skin.

On August 7 ~ 9, B~STEM Project, in partnership with Tyra Beauty, Kastner & Partners and The Rose Group presented bCreative. The program was hosted by Kastner & Partners and aimed at exposing young girls to potential career paths. During this immersive hands-on experience participants learned how to: research and understand their client, develop strategies, navigate through the creative process, produce digital content, design professional presentations as well as pitch their campaigns.  But it also unexpectedly became a sobering narrative about the challenges girls face when it comes to body image and identity.

This program served as the catalyst to many revelations.  It’s clear that the advertising industry is powerful enough to produce both self-hate and self-love.  It’s a medium that can define and re-define. Its influence is unmistakable as we listened to heart-wrenching stories about how images have helped to foster low self-esteem. How the current construct of beauty has made them feel less than and undesirable.   Certainly there are many factors when it comes to young girls defining their own self-worth. However, the world of advertising certainly takes a premiere role.

The fact that teenage girls are ashamed and distressed over the color of their skin is disheartening.  If they’re not comfortable in their own skin, who do they become?  How do our youth contribute the best of themselves and is it possible? This is why we must continue to foster diverse talent and build viable pathways.  The more diverse experiences and minds converge, the sooner this ideology of beauty will be reconstructed. It will then tell the multiethnic and multicultural stories that are inclusive of beauty in all its forms – in every shade imaginable.

Together let’s nurture and empower all of our young girls to reach their fullest potential!
